What are the best tires to buy? How subjective is that question? One could ask the question to 20 different people and get 20 different answers, of who will probably have very honest and enthusiastic stories to back up their choice. If that is the case, how then do you determine which tires are the best or at least the best for your particular need? Not everyone's tires needs are the same. And if we can break down the different needs, we can better identify a better type of tire to meet the needs an individual has. Dividing tires into set categories isn't as easy as it might sound because of the multitude of ways tires get used. But if it can be said that there are generally three basic categories of tires, I think they would have to be classified as this: Highway or touring tires, Crossover or all-terrain tires and off road tires. Keep in mind we are simply speaking about passenger car and light truck applications tires.
To try to classify all tires into these simple categories would be almost impossible because of the many dedicated types of tire applications for so many specialized types of vehicles and service scenarios. But when we apply the simple groups to passenger cars, light trucks and SUV's it works pretty well.
Within each of the basic tire categories that were listed there are several sub categories that will be more specialize by either the type of vehicle or the type of service needed. It is at this level that harder decisions as to your particular driving needs will come into play. If you don't do any driving on non paved surfaces, then you probably can stick with the Highway or touring class of tires. If you live in an area that requires you to do an amount of driving on roads that are dirt or gravel, or less maintained you may want to venture into the crossover or all-terrain tire category. If you often find yourself on back country roads or driving your SUV, light pickup or all wheel drive car in places where roads might be optional or where they are not well maintained, you may want to consider stepping up to the off road category of tires.
Within the Highway group of tires there are many sub categories to choose from. Your particular area and type of driving will determine the best tire to fit your needs. If you live in an area like Phoenix all you may require is a tire that has nothing more than good straight forward road handling characteristics. All tires will to some degree have an amount of water channeling ability if they are DOT certified. If you live in San Francisco or Seattle a good wet weather tire might be a better choice. If you live in a city that gets an amount of snow in the winter months you may want to get what is generally known as an All Season tire, one that works well in most driving conditions, dry pavement, wet or even snow.
If you live in a place like Denver where you are sure to see snow in the winter, you may want to opt for the crossover or all-terrain type tires, which will be a bit more aggressive tread pattern enabling you to have a better grip on snowy streets and travel the back country mountain roads a bit more securely. Winter Mud & Snow tires fall primarily into the all-terrain category of tires. I am betting that more people in the eastern United States are wishing they had a better all-terrain tire this year with the heavy snow that has pummeled them this winter.
So in deciding which tire is best for you think of your type of driving and narrow it down from there. Your determining factors will always be in the answers to these questions

標hat are the weather conditions I drive in most, generally dry, rain, Snow, Mix of all of these?
標ill I be carrying a moderate load or none at all?
